Kindergarten song Kookaburra Sits in the Tall Gum Tree ran through my mind as I crossed the huge swathe of grass fronting this Stoneham Road, Attadale home.
A soaring ghost gum taking pride of place in the lawn is big enough to house a riot of the feathered clowns (collective nouns are often incongruous, but in the case of the laughing kookaburra it’s a perfect description).
When the vendors moved into this four-bedroom home the tree was looking unwell so a tree surgeon was called in.
That had neighbours rushing over for assurances it wasn’t being cut down.
A look at the garden of this 1012sqm block is enough to know that was never going to be the case: This is a home where everything green and leafy is loved.
And what better place to sit back and enjoy the green and pleasant view across tree tops and river glimpses to the Perth skyline, than the huge elevated balcony running along the length of this classic ‘60s home, with its great skillion roof line.
When the weather’s nippy, with sunshine spilling in with joyful abandon, the huge open formal lounge/dining area offers the same views, but warmer.
Floor-to-ceiling glass, a half-timber dado and golden timber floors make lovely space both elegant and cosy.
But come summer you’d barely get me off the balcony—unless for a refreshing plunge in the pool in the back garden.
I fell in love with the benchtops in the long, galley style kitchen, which connects the formal living areas with the informal ones.
The tops are a new take on terrazzo, with gorgeous flecks of polished glass, mostly red/browns and off-white, but if you look carefully you’ll find the occasional emerald green, flashing like a twinkling star.
The informal living spaces have banks of glass onto the rear garden and pool, where careful and prolific planting ensures plenty of privacy for midnight nicky dipping.
All bedrooms are double, while the downstairs one is a huge space with its own entry, making it perfect for a teenage (or 20s something) pad.
Stoneham Road is a great location with plenty of shops and cafes not too far away.
Santa Maria College is close enough for the kids to walk to school, and the foreshore is a great place to walk the dog.
