THIEVES are hiding in the old South Fremantle tip site while scouting nearby homes and cars, say residents.
Police have been conducting early morning stake-outs at the old dump in response to the complaints of a spike in break-ins.
One property owner, who last year narrowly escaped losing his home in an arson attack, said stolen property could be found strewn around the tip site.
Some thieves stashed their loot in the bushes, while others discarded what they didn’t want along the fence line following the cycleway from South Beach to Cockburn Road.
“Recently we had a deaf woman whose car was broken into and her property left scattered along the cycleway,” the resident said.
“She was a target. She didn’t hear a thing, but after we helped searched the area we found her belongings, including her hearing aid.”
Police would not divulge operational details, except to say, “Fremantle police are conducting ongoing operations, targeting thefts from vehicles and other property crime”.
