‘Pool the pools’

06. 5NEWSFREMANTLE deputy mayor Josh Wilson says the South Fremantle Senior High school swimming pool has made such a splash with locals it should stay open every summer.

The pool at the Annie Street school has been open to swimmers since November last year while the council’s pool gets a multi-million dollar facelift.

Cr Wilson says the SFSHS pool usually gathers moss during the summer holidays so it makes sense to keep it open during the hottest months of the year.

“I have suggested that the city consider operating the South Freo pool as a regular extension of swimming options in the summer months, not least because it makes use of a fantastic pool resource that otherwise lies fallow between mid-December and February,” he said. “It’s a reminder that sometimes you can expand community resources and amenity with innovative thinking instead of capital expenditure.

“It also represents a swimming option that is more convenient for people in places like Beacy, WGV, Hilton and Samson, and in parts of ‘greater’ Fremantle like Hamilton Hill and Spearwood.”

The keen splasher says not only will opening the pool bring “life to the area” it could stop vandals targeting the school.
