Live the port life

WITH wonderful candour the vendor pointed out the obvious—living on busy Tydeman Road is hardly a drawcard.

But the trade-off was moving into the area that she and hubby wanted, at a price they could afford.

“Living in North Fremantle is worth it,” she says six years after purchasing.

As the front door closes on this cute semi-detached cottage, trucks rumbling past on their way to North Quay barely register and the surprisingly spacious home is a quiet haven.

Two sets of now-retired rellies visiting annually from overseas, plus the emergence of a young child, means they need more space and an extra bathroom. If it wasn’t for that, they’d be staying put (and they hope, desperately, to be able to buy something nearby to stay in the community they’ve come to love).

One of the three bedrooms is currently an office, complete with built-in desk and lovely, white floor-to-ceiling bookshelves flanking an old fireplace.

High ceilings, mellow jarrah floorboards, fireplaces and ceiling roses aptly demonstrate the home’s early 1900s antecedents.

A central lounge is a gracious space with generous proportions, and a lovely stained glass sash window adds to its charm.

The kitchen/dining area is a rustic delight, with limestone rendered and micro-corrugated tin walls, tucked under a skillion roof.

A soaring flame tree—so big it shades this home and the semi-detached next door—dominates a delightful garden, giving shade in summer and letting in welcoming sunshine in winter.

Silvery aged jarrah fencing makes this a wonderfully private space, and all around the suburb’s history is glimpsed in the limestone walls of neighbouring homes.

With a bus stop and the North Fremantle train station nearby, whether work, play or getting their daughter to school, a car is almost redundant: “We hardly ever drive,” the vendor says.

And with three or four cafes/restaurants around the corner, Fremantle just down the road, and Leighton and Port Beaches a stroll away, why would you.
