Digging the past

WHEN it was built in 1897 this place on Fremantle’s Stevens Street was the local shop and its cellar, dug from the natural limestone ridge, was used to store all manner of edibles, especially over long, hot summer months.

This fantastic subterranean space is now a bedroom, with rendered limestone walls and rocky outcrops and a bank of windows at ground level for natural light.

The kid in me fell in love with this adventurous space, where even the wardrobes are cut into the rock.

Actually I’d fallen in love with the home at the wonderfully red front door, with its quirky brass fox knocker.

The original old shop, with french doors onto the verandah is now a bedroom, with a great mezzanine/loft sleeping area, and a spacious play-study area below.

With its own access it would also make a great home office.

Oregon pine flows like honey as you step inside and walls were clearly ripped out at some point to create an open space that stretches from the front door to the rear deck.

There are two lounge/sitting area, one with an original fireplace to snuggle up in front of in the coming winter weeks.

The large kitchen/dining area has easy access to the expansive timber deck via three sets of french doors. With more windows on the western side the whole area is flooded with light.

This home is an entertainer’s delight with its lovely flowing spaces.

And the modern, stream-lined kitchen ensures cooking up a storm is no problem, with a massive oven and acres of lovely jarrah bench tops, which contrast beautifully with the many white timber cupboards and the timber dado.

The garden is fantastic, with lush greenery to soothe the eye, and a stunning purple wall, set with a timber door to the street, for a funky Freo character.

The spacious main bedroom has massive glass doors onto this very private courtyard area.

With its classic Freo appeal in a smart urban setting this is a great home, close to schools and almost on the doorstep of the CBD.
