New Esplanade plan

FREMANTLE council will look at scaling back events on the Esplanade after a report found the popular reserve isn’t coping.

The council’s special projects committee recently voted to release a new masterplan for public comment.

A staffer’s report noted the park’s turf is infested with sting nematodes, which will require the entire surface to be scraped back five centimetres and new turf laid.

The plan also foreshadows shifting the Carriage Cafe into a new “park hub” beside the ferris wheel, and backing onto the freight train line the council is lobbying to become much busier.

The report foreshadows more paths to prevent grass wear, bigger mulch beds around the iconic Norfolk Island pines, rejigging the Italian club and car park for more passive and youth recreation, extending Norfolk Street to Mews Road and possibly ditching the car park next to Bather’s Beach.
