IMAGINE owning your own 1909 pressed tin bar, in situ in an original taproom. Right next door is the ladies lounge, from a time when well-bred ladies wouldn’t be caught dead in the front bar — even if they’d been allowed.

Add stunning art nouveau pressed tin ceilings and walls, along with lovely old fireplaces, and jarrah floorboards in the many rooms of more than generous proportions, and heritage credentials don’t get any better than those of the old Jandakot Hotel, in Bibra Lake.

With the Jandakot racecourse nearby there was no shortage of patrons stepping up to the wrap-around verandah and through the angled front door, a distinctive characteristic of turn of the century Aussie pubs.

When the last race was run in the 1930s, trade dropped and the pub became the Lucken family home, and a grocery store.

Instead of beer, groceries were passed over the old bar, while the ladies lounge became a storeroom: “I’ve had people saying they used to buy lollies here,” the agent says.

Since the mid-‘60s it’s been simply a home. And what a home, with five bedrooms, and room to not only run, but roller-skate down the long hall.
