THE first thing that comes to mind when stepping inside unit 16 at 1 High Street is, there’s no better place for sunsets in Freo than this.
This jaw-dropping duplex apartment has direct and unrestricted views over the ocean, from South Beach to Fremantle’s oldest building, the Round House, which is mere metres away. I couldn’t even imagine those stunning views were possible.
They are accessible from two different balconies, one from each storey, which have alfresco dining areas and even an Aztec-inspired fountain to encompass the sound of the waves.
It is completely versatile. During spring and summer days you can just chill outside, looking at the exercise groups working out on the beach and joining a yoga class stretching in the privacy of your own balcony, or enjoying Australia Day fireworks with some friends.
For lazier people, the open balconies are also the perfect spot for people-watching.
The entire apartment has an undeniable Mediterranean feel to it. Cosy, warm and familiar, with sand colours in the inside and cement displayed stairs.
There’s an inherent feeling of belonging and peace all around the place: it brings me back to my summer trip to Morocco. I can nearly smell the spices in the souqs.
The ocean breeze fills the air, the smell of roasted vegies in the outdoor BBQ on a hot summer night.
The rooms are huge, with a great heritage skyline on one side and the gorgeous ocean front in the other.
There are two living areas available as well as a third room that can be transformed into a big studio, an art atelier or an exercise room.
The best thing is it is walking distance from the city centre, just a glimpse from the beach and with important landmarks within reach.
The apartment was built in the 1980s during the America’s Cup, in an old tram storage building.
It has its own parking spot undercover and protected from possible intruders and it’s private and quiet despite being next to busy High Street.
I like to think about it as a hidden gem in the core of Freo, with undeniable character and the essence and warmth of the Mediterranean.
