Many paths, many futures at North Lake
“… the thing about my experience at North Lake is that I felt much freer to be myself. I felt like I was subjected to less pressure and less judgment and as a result I seemed to work better.”
(Yann dux 2011, bass player for WAMI award wining Koi Child)
“Being at North Lake has been a great pleasure. I’ve totally changed since I got here. It’s not just the study, I’ve learned respect and seeing everyone as equal. I really like mixing with people from lots of different cultures – you learn different and better ways of doing things and you learn bits of their languages too. It was a good decision to come to North Lake and a very good decision to do Industrial Studies.”
(Abraham, top Industrial Studies student 2015, heavy duty mechanical apprentice)
“When I arrived in Australia from China my English wasn’t good I couldn’t find a school, I was sad because the opportunity to study means everything to me. After a long time of searching I found North Lake Senior Campus. Because North Lake gave me an opportunity I worked hard to prove I was a good student. I had nice teachers who helped me and I want to thank all the teachers here.” (Louie dux 2013, ATAR of 99.3, Bachelor of Science at UWA with majors in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics)
When I came to North Lake I saw how much my work meant to other people and it gave me the drive. I saw the difference, I saw that there was more than one path and that made all the difference. (Georgia, dux 2015)
“I think relationships are a pretty key thing at school and at North Lake you get to really know the teachers. I was really appreciative of how much my writing skills improved. I had a purpose and was working towards something and I was able to do that without distractions and without a strong peer group thing going on.
(Niluka, co-dux 2013, Linguistics UWA)

Lifelong Passion at Swan River Ballet
Swan River Ballet is delighted to welcome Kim Hopkins to its teaching staff. Kim brings a wealth of dance knowledge and experience. She will be teaching the full-time program and the adult classes.
Kim showed great promise as a dancer from an early age. She studied locally under Lucette Aldous, becoming the youngest member of the Youth Dance Company.  At 15 she joined Garth Welch Ballet School in Sydney, and travelled to America to demonstrate the Vagonova method. She was then accepted into the Academie de Danse Classique in Monaco.
At 18, Kim’s dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer were cruelly dashed, when she developed Guillain-Barre – a rare neurological condition that attacks the nerve sheaths resulting in muscle weakness and paralysis.
Kim underwent a lengthy rehabilitation program which sparked her interest in the human body.  She completed a physiotherapy degree and two postgraduate diplomas, with a focus on women’s health. Kim uses her detailed knowledge of core stability and pelvic floor muscles to help students look after their most important asset – their bodies.

Taoist Tai Chi – Your way to better health
Taoist Tai Chi is a very special and effective form of holistic health training, one that can work on the physical, mental and spiritual dimensions of our being. Consisting of a gentle set of 108 movements, plus associated exercises and training methods, the Taoist Tai Chi† internal art of taijiquan is distinguished at the physical level by a significant degree of turning and stretching in each of the movements, in order to exercise the whole physiology. At the mental and spiritual level, it is a method of ‘taming the heart’ and developing an attitude of calm, compassion and reduced self-centredness during practice and in daily life.
