THE parks and wildlife department says it’s now cleaned up as much asbestos as possible from beside a popular family picnic area.
Cockburn Labor MLA Fran Logan raised the alarm about the deadly asbestos after stumbling across it during a beach and bush cleanup at Woodman Point last month.
He returned to the site a fortnight ago and told the Herald he was even more concerned about the cleanup effort.
“I’m not sure how they did it as the bush on either side of the track has been cut back and the track itself seems to have been swept,” Mr Logan said.
“I hope to god that no one from the DEC has actually swept this area either manually or mechanically as who knows what they might have done with all those pieces of blue asbestos.”

• Fran Logan says despite a clean-up, there’s still lots of deadly blue asbestos at Woodman Point park.
But the department says since then its completed the works, picking up as much asbestos as possible, and covering the rest with crushed limestone to reduce the risk.
“In accordance with Department of Health guidelines these sites will continue to be regularly inspected and any emergent pieces of asbestos removed,” a spokesperson from the department said.
Mr Logan remains unconvinced, saying that much of the asbestos lies in patchy scrub next to the tracks, which was still a danger.
“I mean really, this is like every project the Barnett government seems to touch….they never get it right.”
