Crane goes Monday

DEMOLITION of the old crane outside the E-Shed markets on Victoria Quay is due to start on Monday.

Despite pleas from enthusiasts to renovate the Babcock and Wilcox luffing crane, Fremantle Ports has decided it’s now beyond repair and too dangerous.

But bits of the old crane will live on, as it’s to be retained as spares for a second luffing crane near the WA Maritime Museum.

That will also be the fate of one of the old straight jib cranes down that end of the wharf, which will be used to keep its partner in better nick for a few more years.
