A novel twist

TURNING a loo into a library. Now that’s a novel idea. When the vendors of this South Street townhouse moved in they reckoned four toilets was excessive, so they converted a central powder room into a small study and the water-works part became a micro-library complete with walls lined with bookshelves.

After more than 30 years Fremantle continues to surprise me and I had no idea this small enclave of modern townhouses existed.

Tucked down a lane-way off busy South Street this modern cream-brick abode is whisper quiet and as you pass through the secure wrought iron gates and under the cute, peaked timber-roof portico into a private courtyard, the peace intensifies.

Masses of huge windows ensure the three-bedroom home is filled with light, whether you’re in the lounge room facing the front courtyard, the adjacent open kitchen/dining area or the bedrooms.

Crisp white walls are given a golden glow thanks to acres of honey-coloured timber floors throughout.

And a sweep of black granite bench tops in the gallery-style kitchen add a dramatic touch, against a plentitude of white cupboards. Alfresco dining is as simple as stepping out onto the generous balcony, which has ocean and port views.

Built over three levels, the living spaces are accessed from the street level, with the bedrooms above and a second sitting room, and bathroom, on a lower level.

Sliding glass doors in the ground floor sitting room open onto a generous rear courtyard, a very private space with high walls softened by a row of mature trees.

A couple of streets back from Hampton Road, there’s plenty of choices when it comes to shopping, morning coffee, or dinner with friends on the weekend.

And of course the Fremantle CBD is mere minutes away by car, as is South Beach.
