Gracious living

THE original occupants of this McCleery Street, Beaconsfield home are lost in the mists of time, but they were in good company, because next door was wealthy merchant John McCleery.

He was involved in a raft of business dealings, including shipping and banking, and the street bears his name.

He was also a founding member of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce, and was its first secretary.

The gracious living of a bygone age is instantly apparent in this lovely, three-bedroom/one-bathroom limestone home.

A sweep of concrete steps lead to the wide front verandah. Set on Beaconsfield’s premier ridge, it’s just the place to sit in summer after a hard day, with a cuppa – or a wine – and let the sea breeze blow away the cobwebs.

Built around the turn of the century, you’ll find plenty of decorative ceiling roses, fireplaces and deep skirting, along with a river of rich, dark chocolate jarrah floors.

A formal lounge overlooks the street, while the kitchen and dining areas are at the rear of the house.

A sloping, white timber ceiling adds to the cottage feel of the kitchen.

But new owners will no doubt be ripping most of its gubbings out because while its cute and atmospheric, it’s not terribly practical in its current state.

Ditto the dining area, where the paint is peeling off the concrete floor.

But don’t be daunted, there’s scope aplenty to extend out, and up (with council approval) to create a spacious open plan family area, with a parents’ suite above.

Sitting on 384sqm you’ll still have room for a patch of garden, which is presently a limestone terrace with green lawn and a couple of trees, including a mature lemon.

This classic Fremantle cottage is an ideal family home, with Beaconsfield Primary School at the end of the road, and South Fremantle High School in walking distance.

There’s no shortage of shops and cafes close at hand, and it’s a short drive to South Beach.
