Australian furniture company Nick Scali will launch its most cutting-edge showroom to date when it opens the doors to its Jandakot premises on Boxing Day. Established in 1962, Nick Scali Furniture has been run by the Scali family for 54 years. It is renowned for selling beautiful, timeless furniture tailored specifically to Australian tastes.
Third generation
Staffed by 4 locals, the new showroom is an immersive experience in contemporary furniture design, according to head of product development, Stephanie Scali.
Stephanie is the third generation of the Scali family to have joined the company. She regularly travels overseas to stay abreast of emerging trends and to engage manufacturers who are capable of meeting the high quality demands of astute Australian consumers.
“We’ve been furnishing the homes of Australians for generations, so we’ve got a really good understanding of which furniture styles trending overseas are going to be loved by Australians here,” said Ms Scali.
While only 26, Ms Scali has been in the business for over six years, with the foundation of a business degree from the University of Sydney behind her. According to Stephanie, Australian tastes in furniture are very sophisticated.
“Australian tastes are more in line with European trends than the more conservative furniture of the United States. Australians are more adventurous and willing to experiment with bold colours, raw materials and new finishes. As a country we’ve also become more savvy about interior decorating and linking design themes across the one room, or throughout the whole house. Right now – retro is big.
Make a real statement
There’s a lot of demand for furniture with a Scandinavian influence. That’s the clean, minimalist designs and lighter coloured woods of the 1970s. There’s also a move to modern concrete finishes that make a real statement.”
The move to Jandakot, according to Ms Scali, is a natural evolution for the company in Perth.
“We’re already well established in Perth, with showrooms in O’Connor and Osborne Park, and we’ve seen a lot of developments like shopping centres and playing fields in the Jandakot area, which are tell-tale signs of a growing housing market. With close proximity to Fremantle, and right by the airport, the Jandakot showroom is conveniently accessed by the whole southern Perth region.”
