Tevye’s dream

IN Fiddler on the Roof, poor Tevye dreams of being rich enough to build a house with “one long staircase just going up, and one even longer coming down”.

This Roberts Road, Attadale home fits the description to a T, with a central dual staircase leading from a ground floor suite of bedrooms, study and theatre room, to a massive second level open plan living/dining/kitchen.

Go up one and come down the other.

The roof is tile, not the Jewish dairyman’s tin, but as the song goes there’s a wooden floor, in this case a lovely honey-gold bamboo, in the upper level.

This vast space has a formal lounge, informal sitting and a magnificent kitchen, decked out in bespoke American oak cabinetry, which adds a rich lustre to the softer tone of the floor.

River views

A huge island is topped by black granite as is a sweep of bench space behind, and there’s a heap of drawers and cupboards, including a walk-in pantry.

Almost floor-to-ceiling windows and doors flood the living spaces with light and allow delightful river views from a dozen vantage points.

On almost any day the aquatic action is mesmerising as yachts dart and weave and launches and ferries glide by.

Step out onto the spacious alfresco balcony and the view just gets better.

Saltwater pool

When it comes to inviting friends around there’s a built-in barbecue, and while the steaks are cooking guests can head down the spiral staircase for a cooling dip in the saltwater pool.

Sitting on a whopping 809sqm there’s lawn for backyard cricket, and plenty of trees for shade, including a massive jacaranda.

There’s a guest suite on the second level, but the grand main bedroom is on the ground floor; a sweeping space, with access to the pool.

The spacious ensuite is very swish, with a deep bath, separate shower, and cute arched shutters on the window.

The nearby dressing room is so big it has its own window seat.

English elegance best describes the street frontage of this delightful abode, which is across the road from Santa Maria College and a short walk from the river foreshore and Point Walter Reserve.
