THIRTY ONE protesters were arrested at the Roe 8 worksite on Thursday after pushing down fences and chaining themselves to machinery.
More than 1000 people, some chanting and singing, lined the gates surrounding the Coolbellup site from early in the morning.
As a result of the arrests, 39 charges were laid and five move-on notices issued by police as the Roe 8 protest entered a new, semi-militant phase.
The charges included trespass and obstructing public officers.
South metro Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren was at the Coolbellup site when the melee broke-out and says that protestors actions were justified.
“When the legal system fails then it is justified to engage in non-violent protest,” she says.
“Today I was struck by the number of first-time protestors down here: people who were so enraged by the Barnett government’s actions that they made the effort to get up early and come down here before work.”
