SCUBA DIVERS who see more shopping trolleys and beer cans than marine life around Ammo Jetty in Coogee have had enough.

Dumping off the popular Cockburn fishing jetty has got so bad they’ve organised a clean-up dive on February 5.

Connor Smith has been diving for 13 years and says the waters around the Woodman Point jetty are some of the worst in the country for rubbish.

“In terms of bio-diversity of marine life Ammo is one of the best; but for dumped rubbish I’d say it’s one of the worst I’ve experienced in Australia.”

Another local signed up for the dive says that party-goers on the beach and fisherman are mainly to blame.

“Sometimes it’s not the fisherman’s fault and things fall in by accident, but everyone could do a little bit more to keep our oceans clean,” he says.

Cockburn council environment manager Chris Beaton says they are sponsoring the dive and recently launched a “Clean Ocean, Clean Catch” campaign.

“The city is aware that the sea bed under the jetty often accumulates considerable rubbish,” he says.

“It is likely that beach visitors and fishers using the jetty contribute to the rubbish found on the sea bed.

The dive will involve sweeping 30 metres of ocean bed around the 100-metre jetty, and diving to depths of nine metres.

For those whose only experience of diving is watching Jacques Cousteau, the Sea Shepherd have organised a simultaneous clean-up of the beach beside the jetty.
