Be charmed

WITH a building boom fuelled by a gold rush around the turn of the 20th century, it’s no wonder the original owner of this late Victorian home in the South Street heritage precinct could afford such charming opulence.

The furniture maker supplied a market on heat as people flocked to WA and fortunes were made – including his.

Described as a “merchant’s house” his antecedents are vague, but he may have hailed from Robe, South Australia, as Robe House is emblazoned in the stained glass of the front door.

The three-bedroom home was beautifully restored in 1999 and there’s a slew of heritage features including ceiling roses, fireplaces, deep skirting, and golden-pine floors.

Bay window

There’s a delightful old-world feel to one of the bedrooms, with its bay window overlooking the street.

I’m betting what is now a study, with its own fireplace, was once a dressing room.

With a bathroom next door I’d be making this the main bedroom.

Having said that, a second-level “parents’ retreat” is a vast space with plenty to recommend, including a walk-in-robe and ensuite.

Huge glass doors divide the original dining and lounge rooms, and I can imagine them pulled back to create room for dancing.

Full length sash windows open on to the wrap-around verandah for revellers to step out for a breath of fresh air – or maybe a romantic dalliance.

The very generous country-style kitchen, with stone benches and white timber cupboards, has plenty of heritage appeal, including a timber wall and ceiling – with all the mod cons.

An expansive timber deck is a bridge between the house and a delightful garden, a great alfresco area for breakfast, lunch or dinner on these pleasant summer days.

Greenery

Sitting on 417sqm there’s room for lawn and plenty of greenery, and there’s even a little sitting nook tucked away behind the shrubbery.

There’s secure parking off a right-of-way for two cars, although with the free CAT bus almost on the doorstep, and Freo’s CBD a mere 10 minute walk away they probably won’t get much of a run.
