FREMANTLE’S Citizens Advice Bureau is facing “imminent closure” unless a new home can be found.

The bureau’s Queensgate offices will be demolished as part of the $220 million Kings Square redevelopment and despite a six-month search a new office with nominal rent hasn’t been found.

CAB co-ordinator Pat Baxter says commercial rents are not an option, because they are a not-for-profit organisation, so she’s looking for a landlord with a philanthropic heart.

“We are looking for a self-contained space consisting of a reception area, at least two enclosed offices, kitchenette and toilet on the ground floor or with lift access,” she says.

“The bureau is now faced with imminent closure if nothing an be found. Cockburn council has offered to help us out, but we want to stay in Fremantle, because we are Fremantle CAB, and are close to public transport here.”

For the last 50 years, Fremantle CAB has been the first port of call for locals seeking legal advice.

Every fortnight a lawyer attends the bureau and provides advice on a variety of issues, including wills, guardianship and probate.
