X marks the spot

THIS Fremantle home is known locally as the “X House”, because of the giant X displayed in its upper bedroom window.

So if it’s an ex-house, what is it now?

One thing’s for sure, this South Street home is intriguing, and its clever design squeezes a lot into the 270sqm space.

Built by local firm CODA, the home has great living and outdoor entertainment spaces, including a roof alfresco with sweeping views across Fremantle to the ocean.

Inside, unfinished concrete floors and white concrete ceilings create a fantastic urban industrial feel.

A huge shelving/TV/stereo cabinet is gracefully concealed behind massive bright red doors, and a clever tracking system lets the doors pull across to shut the living room off from upstairs.

The bold use of colour in the spacious, open-plan living/kitchen/dining area ensures a welcoming feel, and I loved the red hues of the cupboards, contrasting with a couple of solid green/gold ones (trust me it works).

There’s nothing cramped about the long, lean kitchen, with masses of bench space and a huge scullery.

Off the dining room is a sheltered courtyard, and if you pull open the floor-to-ceiling bi-fold doors, the entertainment area has more than doubled.

Throw in a huge built-in-barbeque and pizza oven and this is a great party space.

The four bedrooms and two bathrooms are upstairs, along with an open study/office (there’s a powder room downstairs).

The home is near the South Street and South Terrace intersection, so I expected traffic noise, but despite two of the bedrooms overlooking the street, it was nice and quiet.

At the rear of the home, the main bedroom has a huge window/door opening onto a balcony, and security mesh means the door can be left open for the Freo doctor.

A set of steel stairs lead to a huge flat roof, which will be a hit with friends for summer cook-ups on the built-in barby.

This is a funky city abode, but the owners live here with their three young kids, so it is viable for families as well.
