COCKBURN council is considering a new $250,000, three-day festival to celebrate its coast.

To be called Coogee Live, the March festival will be created by rolling a series of smaller concerts together, similar to how Fremantle council built up its annual festival a few years back.

A report to this week’s council meeting describes the event as a showcase featuring an innovative lighting and laser display, theatre, an art exhibition and a hawkers market.

The concept was enthusiastically supported when put out for consultation, with 97 per cent of respondents to an online survey giving it the thumbs up, while the Coogee Beach progress association, surf lifesaving club and friends group all sent letters of approval.

But it will require $45,000 each from Healthway and Lotterywest, with staff warning that if that doesn’t pan out, the festival will have to be cancelled and be replaced with a simple concert. The city is also planning to hold a concert in Legacy Park, Cockburn Central, as well as three seniors events and the usual favourites like the Teddy Bears’ Picnic, as part of its annual events program.
