SUNSET EVENTS’ lease at J-Shed on Arthur Head is under threat with Fremantle council staff losing patience with the events promoter.
Sunset wants to set up a tavern and music venue in one of the shed’s studios, but hasn’t yet met a list of conditions which were supposed to be completed before its lease takes effect in July.
It has applied to the council to give it an extension, but at this week’s Finance, Policy, Operations and Legislation Committee a staff recommendation to knock it back sailed through because mayor Brad Pettitt and a couple of councillors had to declare and interest and there was no quorum.

• FREMANTLE council has released plans for a new sporting hub to be tucked behind the South Beach kiosk. It will feature a court which can be used for basketball, futsal, roller-hockey, volleyball and wheelchair basketball. It’s also got an area set aside for slacklining, while there’ll be a nod to kids with a mini nature play area under existing trees.
A staff report says Sunset’s had plenty of time to get development and liquor applications sorted out. The company’s first development application got knocked back by the council and the WA Planning Commission, but the Herald understands a scaled-back version was this week submitted to the council.
Sunset will have another chance to convince councillors to give it some leeway when the item comes before full council on June 28.
