So South Freo

TUCKED behind a high fence on Douro Road is a South Fremantle gem.

It’s a 1928 weatherboard cottage with a separate studio apartment, and a garden you’d expect to find fairies at the bottom of.

The original front verandah has been extended to create a huge timber deck.

Shielded by the fence and sheltered by mature trees and lush garden beds, it’s a delightful area to sit and contemplate life.

Or you could wander down the terraced steps to a sunken garden and spark up the barbecue.

Wood-fired stove

Inside in the house are all the heritage bells and whistles, including jarrah floors, ceiling roses, fireplaces and attractive jarrah architraves in the hall and central living room.

Double-glazed windows on the two front-facing bedrooms ensure a peaceful night’s repose.

In the spacious kitchen, blue and yellow cupboards and a sweep of honey gold bench tops make the space cheery and practical.

The old wood-fired stove has been replaced with a double pantry and there’s a cellar for extra storage.

A second lounge room has been created by enclosing the original wrap-around verandah, and the owner matched the profile of the weatherboards to give this light-filled room a primrose yellow half dado.

Crisp white tiles in the modern bathroom, which has a deep bath, contrast with a gorgeous pillar-box red Zinongo basin and golden marine-ply vanity.

Air conditioning keeps things cool and a bank of solar panels means you won’t have to worry about running costs.

Separated from the home, by a timber walkway, is a two-storey apartment, with a spacious kitchen/dining area on the ground floor, and a generous living room and bedroom on the upper level.

There are a swag of shops and a cafe within walking distance, and South Beach is only minutes away on foot.
