Local football club seeking new players…women welcome!
Cockburn Lakes Amateur Football Club is seeking players for season 2018. Known locally as The Warriors, the club has up until now fielded just the two teams – Seniors and Reserves, but that looks set to change. With the ever growing community interest in AFL, the club is planning to expand to include a Women’s Grade (AFLW) and Junior Sides. Club President Lionel McQueen commented, “The first year of the AFLW has been great and the interest shown from women to get involved in football has been outstanding. We want to provide them with the opportunity to play footy and at the same time join a strong family-oriented sporting community”.
The women’s competition in the WAAFL began last year, with 8 teams competing in a round-robin competition. Cockburn Lakes hopes that the competition will grow to allow women to play weekly in a home and away season. The women’s competition is open to ages 17 and above.
Just as exciting for The Warriors is the new partnership formed with Bibra Lake Junior Football Club – the Bandicoots. In 2018 the Bandicoots will play and train at the home of Cockburn Lakes. It’s a move that will benefit both clubs, allowing players to transition smoothly from junior to senior levels. Bibra Lake JFC will enter a Year 11 side (2001 birthdate) into the 2018 competition.
The club is also looking to enter a Colts side in 2018 (1998, 1999 & 2000 birthdate) which could provide future opportunities for talented young players to play in the WAFL, as The Warriors have strong ties to South Fremantle Football Club. Mr McQueen added, “The future of football is strong in the community, and the joining of Bibra Lake and Cockburn Lakes will ensure that players have a comfortable transition from junior to senior football. The club is looking to expand to provide the community with the opportunity to participate in such a great game. We have the resources, infrastructure and support to make sure that the addition of a women’s team and junior teams are successful.”
Cockburn Lakes AFC is holding a Registration Day at the Anning Park Clubrooms on Saturday December 9th at 4pm. All current and new players are encouraged to attend and register their interest for a team in Season 2018. All are invited to stay and attend Cockburn Lakes AFC’s Annual Christmas Party beginning at 6pm.
