FROM the outside, V-Dub Repairs & Spares doesn’t look like much—a small car garage on South Terrace with an unassuming brick exterior.
However, once you venture inside, it’s a hive of Herbie Goes Bananas activity.
Decked out with bright yellow and red walls, you would be forgiven for thinking you had walked into a toy shop, only this place repairs and services real Volkswagens, from modern Golfs to classic Campervans and Beetles.
Twenty six years ago Kurt Phillips struck gold when the garage where he worked, V-Dub repairs, went up for sale and he decided to take the plunge and buy it.
In 1995 he moved the shop from its original Fremantle location in Queen Victoria Street to South Terrace.
Kurt’s wife Dawn says the buy-out was perfectly timed, as over the last two decades Volkswagens have come back into vogue, especially Campers in hippy-dippy Fremantle.
“We pride ourselves on the quality of our service, guaranteeing a warranty for all of our customers, as well as a positive experience for everyone that walks through our doors,” she says.
“Simply put—we put our customers first”.
All members of the family-run business own Volkswagens, including son Julian, who just graduated from high school and is doing work experience at the garage.
Ms Phillips says that customers love that Kurt has 30 years’ experience repairing veedubs, and they get a 50-50 split of modern and retro models coming in for repairs and servicing.
She says the VW community is a close-knit bunch and their relationship with their customers is like a bond, transcending the usual service you get at a big chain.
“We aim to do the right thing for our customers, and just be friendly,” she says.
“No one is just a number here—that’s what it’s all about”.
