THIS Georgian mansion in Bicton is so authentic it has “bricked-up” windows—a tactic used in Britain in the 18th century to avoid paying window tax.
The owners of this magnificent Crewe Street home fell in love with Georgian architecture while living in London.
“It really appealed because of the simplicity and proportion. They just got it right,” the owner says.
Renowned Fremantle architect Marcus Collins had returned home after studying Georgian architecture in London, and made sure the five-bedroom home was as authentic as possible—right down to the colour and texture of the many thousands of bricks used.
Grouting, using the labour-intensive “two-strike” style was replicated, and all the down pipes are copper.
Every room in this massive home is an ode to a bygone era, with fixtures and fittings sourced from demolition and antique dealers around the world.
Beautiful white marble fireplaces in the formal lounge and dining room, and a black marble fireplace in the billiard room, were sourced from the old Fremantle Commonwealth bank.
The bespoke pool cues, which are staying, were salvaged from an old billiard hall in Barrack Street.
The dramatic black and white flagstones in the massive entry are a mix of white Donnybrook stone and black marble.
In the kitchen there are Georgian-style jarrah fittings, Italian terracotta tiles and plenty more period flourishes, but don’t fret, it still has all the mod cons.
The huge oven has a granite splash-back, and the timber shelving in the butler’s panty is from a legal firm in the city.
There’s a wine tasting room, with it’s own cellar, on a lower floor.
On the second level are the bedrooms, including the huge main with a dressing room and spacious ensuite.
French doors open onto the verandah, where you can enjoy river views stretching to Mosman Park and Claremont.
The third floor is a sweeping space that could be used for just about anything.
Words can’t begin to describe this drop-dead gorgeous 1347sqm property. There’s even the chance to buy the block next door.
