Golden elegance

GOLD fever, the opening of Fremantle’s inner harbour and a new rail link to Perth sparked a Freo building boom in the late 1880s.

Adding to the flourish of gorgeous residences was this delightful home on Lefroy Road.

The grand old dame has been extensively renovated, but still exudes all the charm and elegance of a bygone era.

Cobblestone paths and boxwood hedging set the tone as you step through a wrought iron gate and up to the wide verandah, which has a frangipani on one side and a sweet-smelling magnolia on the other.

Rich jarrah

Things just keep getting better as you step into a long hallway with an ornate, recessed ceiling and rich jarrah floor.

Two of the five bedrooms have lovely coal fireplaces and french doors opening onto the verandah.

Walls have been removed from two central rooms to create a spacious lounge and dining area with beautiful art nouveau fireplaces and decorative ceiling roses.

A hand-crafted jarrah staircase leads to the huge main bedroom, which has a stunning recessed ceiling and an amazing frieze of ferns and flowers cast in white plaster.

Sweeping views

A bank of french doors open onto a balcony with sweeping ocean and island views.

The kitchen is a blend of old and new, featuring ornate ceilings, a tessellated tile floor and an original coal fireplace that honours the past.

There’s a heap of white cupboards and drawers, including an almost floor-to-ceiling double pull-out pantry and a huge utility cupboard.

A bank of bifold windows open onto a covered alfresco, taking the hassle out of serving food while entertaining.

At the rear of the landscaped garden is the coach house, which has a pleasant vestibule, generous kitchen and living area.

Tucked under the eaves of the second level is a mezzanine and a main bedroom, and there’s a small balcony with great ocean views.

This magnificent 622sqm home is just around the corner from Beaconsfield Primary School and Fremantle College, and a short walk from a heap of shops and cafes and South Beach.
