Freo’s Taxbnb

FREMANTLE council will slug short stay accommodation providers with extra rates from this year.

At this week’s meeting the council approved a differential rate of 8 cents in the dollar for short-termers in areas zoned residential to ensure they’re paying for facilities associated with commercial uses.

Providers are furious.

Catherine Powell, who offers a room in an apartment on Marine Terrace, says its simply against Freo’s “vibe” to hit small operators with more costs during an economic downturn.

“It’s not the bigger operators you are taking from, it’s the person who rents out their second bedroom for the company, for income that pays for some of their creature comforts like lighting and heating,” she said.
