THE owners of this Applecross home knew exactly what they wanted when they approached neighbour Peter Overman to design their home more than 30 years ago.
They felt Perth homes in the 80s were either bland with pokey rooms, or ostentatious, and they wanted neither: “I didn’t want a modern house, I wanted a character home…and a family home because I had four children,“ the family patriarch recalls.
He and his wife cut out pictures of the features they wanted, pasted them in a scrapbook and handed it to the award winning architect with the brief to add some of his own stylish ideas.
Oregon pine was purchased from Fremantle’s old woolstores in readiness: “[And] the doors come from the old Durack house.”
The scent of fir tree lingers in the age-mellow Oregon which was used to create the many beams in the huge lounge, and the fireplace mantle.
From the lounge, walls of glass gaze across manicured lawn and the pool to the river and parkland.
The semi-open kitchen is massive, with a huge central island and acres of granite bench tops.
With its white cupboards, walk-in-pantry, mix of terracotta floor tiles, a couple of raw brick pillars and a timber ceiling the kitchen will delight the fussiest chef.
There’s a state-of-the-art Miele induction cooktop, barbeque grill, double ovens, a steam oven, and double warming trays, along with built-in microwave and an integrated double fridge.
Alfresco entertaining doesn’t get much better than the massive covered outdoor area, with its timber deck, barbecue kitchen and pizza oven.
There’s grass for the kids to play on and with its granite rocks, timber landing and tall palms the pool is an enticing oasis.
The parents suite is on the ground floor, with a huge dressing room and a small walk-in-robe and study nook.
The kids bedrooms are on the second level, where a massive bathroom was fitted out to accommodate three teenage girls, and one of the bedrooms has an ensuite, and a mezzanine for a study or for sleep-overs.
There’s also a spacious study, with a built-in-desk for four.
This really is a gorgeous character home, and stunning river and city skyline views are the icing on the cherry.
