A homely vibe

THIS row of limestone terraces on South Street dates back to 1900 and over the years a customs officer, master mariner and travelling salesman have all lived there.

You can immediately sense that number 29 has enjoyed decades of living and loving when you step inside to discover a warm homeliness that has nothing to do with the temperature outside.

The owner searched high and low to find his dream Fremantle home.

“As soon as I walked in, the house said ‘Hello’,” he recalls.

The two-bedroom abode in South Freo is perfect for a couple looking for an inner-city lifestyle – the CBD is only a 10-minute walk away – and when you need to chill out, South and Bathers Beaches are close by.

As you’d expect there’s plenty of heritage bells and whistles, including wide jarrah floorboards, high ceilings, fireplaces, stained glass and decorative ceiling roses.

The cosy central lounge flows seamlessly into a galley-style kitchen and a dining area overlooking the garden.

A long strip of sky-lighting in the timber ceiling bounces natural light off the kitchen’s pine cupboards and bench tops, creating a rich golden glow.

French doors lead to the lush, terraced garden and a covered alfresco.

Sitting on 257sqm, the garden is compact but there’s plenty of greenery, including a heavily-fruiting lemon tree.

The main bedroom has a funky mezzanine bed, built from timber rescued from the old Deckchair Theatre.

The second bedroom doubles as a study, where space is maximised with ingenious bookshelves that can be transformed into beds.

There’s a double garage on Francisco Street, but living this close to Fremantle that second car would probably gather dust.
