Fresh mural for fest

• This ageing mural on Hubble Street in East Fremantle is being painted over.

THE town of East Fremantle will spend more than $6500 on a new mural in Hubble Street for the start of the George Street festival.

The existing mural on the JP MacKenzie building is old and “beyond repair”,  according to a city report, so councillors unanimously voted to replace it with new artwork.

The town sought expressions of interests in August and five artists submitted concept designs.

The Chook asked the council for a copy of the chosen design, but it wasn’t keen to cough it up wanting to keep it a surprise for the festival.

The mural is expected to tie in with the town’s “artistic theme for George Street”, which is discover, connect and encounter.

Work on the mural is scheduled to start today (November 10) and finish on November 23, two days before the festival.
