HE’S danced with Kylie Minogue, appeared in The Great Gatsby and performed for Jennifer Lopez, but now Austin Chandler is coming home.
The former John Curtin College of the Arts student has opened Drop Low, Perth’s first ever commercial dance studio for adults, at the redeveloped Brush Factory in East Fremantle.
“It’s aimed at complete beginners to help spread the joy of dance to everybody, no matter what age ability or fitness level.”
Chandler started dancing aged six, and attended WAAPA before moving to Sydney to pursue a career in dance.
Incredible opportunities came his way and he worked with Leonardo DiCaprio on Baz Luhrmann’s Gatsby
“That was one of my highlights,” he tells the Herald.
He also performed with Kylie Minogue for her Sydney tour, along with Jessie J, Deborah Cox and Samantha Jade.
“And did the opening concert for Jennifer Lopez,” says Chandler.
Life on the road isn’t all glitz and glamour and finding himself on a plane every weekend began to pall, so Chandler became a choreographer/creative director for companies like Harpers Bazaar and Nike, working with models on the catwalk.
“I incorporated dance into corporate advertising and events,” he says.
“It’s amazing how popular dance has become for advertising.”
Drop Low’s classes, which include jazz, hip hop and dancing in high heels, are as good as a workout, Chandler says.
“Studies have shown the wonderful physical and mental health benefits from dancing.”
