BASS LEMON sounds like the name of a novelty band, but their debut single is about sexual assault.
The band members – Finn Pearson, Ellen Mai, Doug Lawrie, Fred Bjorksten and Leo Rossi – have been playing music together since primary school.
Now all about 18, Pearson says the group is releasing its debut single No Means No.
Written by Mai, it’s a punchy, fight-back song about the sexual assault of a friend.
“This is aimed at [the perpetrator],” she says.
Last year Bass Lemon played the Fairbridge Festival, and I was there as they rocked out in front of several hundred screaming young fans.
The band fuses soul, early jazz and funk, and is heavily influenced by the likes of Bill Withers and Nina Simone.
Catch this dynamic band, and claim you were ahead of the crowd, at the Aardvark Bar, (Norfolk Hotel) Saturday March 23, 7pm.
Tix $10 at the door.
