Works to fix eroded beach

FREMANTLE’S Port Beach is still closed while Fremantle council cleans up and assesses the erosion from recent storms.

The beach has been closed since last Friday (June 7), but all other council facilities near the beach are safe and remain open.

“There are poles, posts and other debris protruding from the sand and hidden under the water that could pose a serious risk to swimmers,” says Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt.

There were concerns the car park and other infrastructure could have collapsed.

The city is investigating a range of erosion fixes that could be funded by a Coastal Adaptation and Protection grant from the state government. To better protect facilities near the beach, the city is planning to build temporary rock walls.
