LIFE is grim for kids living in the slum of Kathmandu, but Breaking Poverty Through Education Nepal is helping to change that.

The organisation has provided education for 35 children mostly from a caste labelled “the untouchables”.

“Education is the most valuable skill we can provide to break the cycle of poverty,” Fremantle local Julian Silburn says.

• A child and mother from Kathmandu have benefited from a program run by a Perth charity.

Many of the kids have had tragic upbringings and use art therapy to cope with the trauma. 

BPTEN, which was founded by local James Spence, trains mothers to sew so they can be financially independent running micro businesses. 

The bags and backpacks they make will be on sale at the Fibonacci Centre in Fremantle today (Saturday October 19).

There will also be music, vegetarian food and a fundraising auction.
