WALKING and cycling access under Canning Bridge will be disrupted from next month as Melville council deals with sinkholes.
The sinkholes have been causing the shared path to subside for several years, with a geotechnic report three years ago finding soil was seeping through the mortar of the seawall.
A geotextile fabric behind the wall was also possibly breaking down.
At this week’s council meeting a contractor was appointed to carry out repairs, which are to start next month and are likely to take 12 weeks.
The council says it will take the opportunity to tizz up the landscaping around the area as part of the $900,000 works, but four mature palm trees are to remain. The works won’t affect the opening hours of the Raffles, and the path in front of the hotel will remain open, but residents might have to put up with some daytime noise for a couple of months.
The council says it will provide alternative routes under the bridge via its website.
