POLICE have charged a 40-year-old Freo man over the October 9 theft of the Bella statue at Bathers Beach.
While Bella has not yet been recovered, police said they made the arrest after being given a tip-off from a member of the public, charging the man with stealing and possession of drug paraphernalia, stolen property and methylamphetamine with intent to sell or supply.
He is due to appear in the Fremantle Magistrate’s Court on November 22.In addition, two Fremantle men aged 33 and 38 will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date on drug and stolen property offences.
The near $100,000 dollar, 150kg-plus bronze statue may not appeal to thieves’ artistic tastes, but rather for its scrap metal value, which currently nets around $4 per kilogram at Perth’s junkyards.
