A safe bet

FARRIER Lane gets its name from the many stables and farriers that once called White Gum Valley home.

In the late 1800s camel trains bedded down on the ultra-wide verges before heading to the goldfields, and in the early 1900s stable hands raced their horses down the streets to Richmond Raceway in East Fremantle.

The high garden walls around number 2 on Farrier Lane were once part of a stables.

The rest of the building was knocked down years ago, and when the owner bought the vacant block he chose a house design that complemented the area’s history.

A sweet-smelling jasmine bower, with an ornate wrought-iron gate, leads to a stunning garden sheltered behind the old stable walls.

On the outside of the house, Fremantle’s history is depicted in a beautiful, almost cartoon-strip mosaic, created by the owner’s sister.

This single-storey home has a central open living/dining/kitchen, flanked by bedrooms on either side.

Three of the four bedrooms are part of a kids’ wing with its own sitting area.

On the other side of the open plan is the main bedroom, where Tassie oak shines underfoot. There’s a walk-in-robe, ensuite and an office/study.

Back in the central living area there’s a soaring skillion roof, oatmeal-coloured tiles and banks of white colonial shutters.

Pressed-tin cladding on the kitchen bench is an old world touch in this thoroughly modern space, which has white stone benchtops and a huge pull-out pantry.

An enchanting garden with a profusion of flowers and trees is a fantastic spot for entertaining.

A huge curved pergola offers protection from the weather, and the bird life is prolific, thanks to mature trees lining the streets in every direction.

Just up the road is Booyeembara Park, which has an olive grove, lake, barbecue and exercise areas.

The local primary school and public golf course are also nearby.
