CANCER patients and their carers can take advantage of free introductory yoga courses in Hamilton Hill next month.
Organised by Cancer Council WA, the Life Now courses have already help cancer patients across the state like Lisa Ireland.
“Embracing meditation and yoga has been life changing for me through this difficult time,” she says.
“I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to participate in the Life Now classes with Patti. I have learned to calm my mind and make peace with my body.”
The physical benefits of practising yoga and tai chi are well documented, but yoga teacher Patti McBain says the classes give cancer patients something extra.
“I notice the Life Now yoga and meditation classes provide many opportunities, not just the benefits of accessible stretches and quiet meditation time to bring greater calm assurance, but also a place to be understood (even without words) and to belong, be with others who appreciate the challenges and are supportive just by being there too,” Ms McBain says.
“Yoga is really a state of being and it helps people feel calmer inside and to have a bit more of that after class too.”
Cancer Council WA’s Ryoka Elton says the free classes are only possible thanks to generous community donations.
“Cancer Council WA is committed to supporting West Australians impacted by cancer, and their carers, and are extremely grateful for generous community donations that enable us to offer the Life Now Program around WA,” she says.
“The evidenced based courses offered through the program, including exercise, yoga, tai chi, meditation and mindfulness, have been linked to significant improvements in the physical and mental wellbeing of people affected by cancer, and we hear this mirrored time and again in the positive testimonials received from participants.”
You can attend the introductory classes in person at Yogaveda Wellness, 1 Emplacement Crescent in Hamilton Hill on Mondays (February 15 – March 29) 12pm-1pm.
Or do online yoga on Wednesdays (February 17 – March 24) 11:15am-12:15pm, and online Mindfulness on Fridays (February 5 – March 26) 10am-12pm.
