Life in the slow lane

THE streets of old towns are full of strange anomalies, as Little Lefroy Lane in South Fremantle attests.

To all intents and purposes there is no “lane” just a continuation of Lefroy Road, running a couple of kilometres east to Carrington Street.

Regardless, this pocket handkerchief collection of houses at the South Terrace end are in the “lane”.

Juxtaposed amongst a mix of old homes this modern four-bedroom abode stands out with its expansive pitched roof and triangular mass of glass frontage.

And outstanding features continue inside, as steel girders, acres of glass, timber beams, and a soaring cathedral ceiling overwhelm the senses.

Massive walls of glass bounce light off golden blackbutt timber floors and, despite the vast openness of the living/dining/kitchen, there’s a sense of cosy intimacy.

It’s not often you get to look at more than a wall as you cook dinner, but in this kitchen there’s glass to the second level looking onto a lovely little garden. Just be careful not to burn the sauce as you drift off, mesmerised by the tranquil water feature.

A sweep of black granite provides plenty of workspace and a huge walk-in pantry ensures there’s no shortage of ingredients to work with.

And when it comes to alfresco dining there’s a delightful, long, lean garden to relax in. Protected by high walls and lush plantings this is a private space whether eating alone or entertaining.

The vendor is an artist, her studio a spacious ground floor room with huge windows and glass doors providing plenty of light. It would make a great main bedroom, with oodles of room, and doors to a sheltered garden. A bathroom is nearby.

A generous mezzanine sitting room looks down on the living area, and acts as a gangway to a spacious and light-filled office overlooking the “lane”.

The main bedroom is generous, with a walk-in robe and a semi-ensuite with a spa to soak away work-a-day weariness.

This charming home is mere metres away from a swag of cafes and boutiques on South Freo’s cappuccino strip.

Or grab your bathers and wander down to South Beach for a dip and brunch.
