A MAN has died after yet another e-scooter incident, in Bibra Lake after colliding with a truck on Tuesday morning.
Police say the 35-year-old was killed after a collision with a white Isuzu truck at the intersection of Bibra Drive and Walliabup Way.
Emergency services arrived at the scene at 10.40am and transferred the man to Fiona Stanley Hospital “in a critical condition”, but he later died from his injuries.
Major Crash investigators are calling for dashcam, mobile phone, or CCTV footage of the incident, and have requested anyone with knowledge of the incident to call Crime Stoppers.
It’s the third death involving an e-scooter, following the deaths of 13-year-old Ava Seculovic in Wanneroo last year and Perth father Thanh Phan in Northbridge in June.
Regulated
E-scooters, or ‘e-rideables’, are currently regulated differently around Australia: after Mr Phan was killed, the City of Perth “indefintely suspended” e-scooter hire in the CBD.
Currently, the NSW government only allows hired e-scooters on its roads as part of a safety trial, while privately-owned scooters “remain illegal on NSW roads and road-related areas”, including bike lanes, shared paths, and footpaths.
Under NSW regulation, personally owned e-scooters are only permitted for use on private property.
WA Police and Road Safety minister Reece Whitby flagged an inquiry into e-rideables in WA at a press conference last month.
“I’ve become increasingly concerned about safety issues around e-rideables and e-scooters, and I’m particularly concerned about the safety and vulnerability of pedestrians,” Mr Whitby said.
The results of the inquiry are expected to be handed down in September.
