Cockburn sups sweet Fremantle Nectar

Photo PlaceIT’S not quite on the scale of the Dockers coup, but Cockburn has again muscled in on Fremantle, poaching its International Women’s Day festival.

Nectar has been held in Fremantle for four years but council support had eroded to the point where organiser Kylie Wheatley was only offered free use of the town hall. When Cockburn came calling with a better deal she took a leaf out of the AFL team’s book and headed south. This year’s festival will be at Manning Park on March 8 and 9.

“[A] new home…at gorgeous Manning Park, generous funding and much in-house support,” Ms Wheatley beamed to the Herald. Cockburn mayor Logan Howlett says his council “saw an opportunity” and went with it.

Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt reckons his council wasn’t comfortable giving too much extra support to an event that last year charged $100 a head for dinner.
