FREMANTLE state Labor MP Simone McGurk fears the historic Fremantle police station could become another deserted heritage eyesore.

The asbestos-riddled Henderson Street site is vacant, with police now scattered throughout the region.

“The Barnett government needs to do something quickly about the police station so we are not looking five or 10 years down the road at yet another boarded-up building,” Ms McGurk says.

She was joined this week by federal Labor MP Melissa Parke and mayor Brad Pettitt in calling for quick action to protect the building’s heritage.

“The state government has done the right thing to protect the police officers who worked at the old Fremantle police HQ,” Dr Pettitt said: “However it is important the state government also do the right thing by the people of Fremantle and take action to protect the long-term future of our built heritage.”

Ms Parke says the Gillard government has poured money into the Fremantle prison and Princess May building, and it’s time for the WA government to step up.
