Traditional Italian food – with love

PORTOROSA, Fremantle:

For many non-Italians, Italian food consists of pizza, pasta and mussels, but an Italian person knows better. They know that the cuisine of their homeland is rich and varied. If you ask ten different Italians how to make a traditional pasta sauce you would end up with ten different recipes.

And with so many variations – how do you know what is authentic?

Portorosa’s Joe Napoli says it comes down to the tradition of preparing food; combining simplicity with the best seasonal produce and made with tender, loving hands. “Authentic Italian cuisine doesn’t come from a particular region like Naples or Bologna – it comes from a place of love”.

Born and raised in Italy, Joe has extensive experience in the Italian kitchen. Many Fremantle folk will remember Joe as the former owner of three-time gold plate finalist Bella Napoli. It’s this same outstanding food and friendly service that you’ll now find at Portorosa, which Joe describes as his “bambino amore”.

This bambino amore is classic Italian, with a comfortable, neighbourhood charm and serves up traditional Italian dishes – the Sicilian way. On the menu there’s all the Italian favourites including woodfired pizza, linguine vongole, spaghetti portorosa (seafood) and home made pasta dishes such as tortellini alla panna and gnocchi napolitana or gorgonzola. There’s also succulent seafood, like the famous misto mare, rack of lamb or rib eye and weekly specials including Joe’s family favourites. The kids’ menu is very popular, and should keep the younger members of the family happy. After all, Italy is all about family.

Fully licensed with a good selection of Australian wines and imported beers, Portorosa is also BYO (wine only).  Birthday parties and corporate functions are welcome. Can’t think what to buy that special someone? Why not spoil them with a Portorosa gift voucher?

When you’re looking for great Italian food, a welcoming atmosphere and fantastic service – the place to be is Portorosa. Open for breakfast Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
