Dockers stick with Cockburn HQ plan

The Dockers remain “confident” the Abbott government will come good on $10 million funding for their proposed $113m training HQ at Cockburn Central.

That’s despite regional development minister Warren Truss confirming to the Herald he’d canned the funding promise made by Julia Gillard, saying Cockburn council would have to reapply.

Hitting the streets on the day of the Dockers’ grand final appearance, the Herald’s front page scoop about the axed funding sparked a media frenzy.

In the week since the article was published no-one has managed to wangle a funding commitment out of either the Abbott or Barnett governments.

“The $10 million funding allocation to the city of Cockburn as the project principal was provided through round four of the Regional Australia Development Fund, and was budgeted, committed to and terms agreed to prior to the calling of the 2013 election,” Dockers’ CEO Steve Rosich said.

“Both the City of Cockburn and the Fremantle Football club have had and continue to have positive discussions about the project with various members of the state and federal coalition governments.

“We believe that this important regional community project is consistent with the policies of both the state and federal coalition governments.”
