My memory of this charming Hamilton Hill home will forever be linked to the taste of parsley, after nibbling on a hearty sprig plucked from the veggie patch as I checked out the house.

The agent is a keen gardener, and I suspect this, coupled with his Italian heritage, is why he took me around the back rather than through the front door—to show off the edible opulence.

I’m an outdoor kind of gal and loved the forest of herbs, spinach and tomatoes growing all a tumble in the limestone-terraced garden on this generous 746sqm block.

The sprawling timber deck off the rear of the home would be my place of choice for just about any meal.

Bifold doors off the living area open onto a roofed patio—walled on three sides it’s a sheltered area anytime of the year.

And a built-in-barbecue kitchen guarantees no-fuss entertaining.

It’s within walking distance to schools, Phoenix shopping centre, a medical centre, and the delightful Manning Park.

After a stint in the garden, or on return from nearby South or Coogee beach, there’s an outdoor shower where you can freshen up.

Solar and underground power mean the soaring trees in the front garden/forest don’t have to be hacked back each year, while solar panels are money in the bank.

You can watch the trees grow from an expansive timber front deck, accessed off the open-plan living area via more bifold doors.

The kitchen is spacious and functional and if you’re tall you’ll kiss the gods of providence: A previous owner had the benches built to match her height. But if you’re a shorty like me, you’ll want to take advantage of the handy plank-steps while you look to modernise. The kitchen is lovely with its timeless recessed timber and has many more years in it, but it’s also dated enough to warrant a facelift.

Rich, polished but character-filled jarrah floors flow throughout the home, from the open kitchen/living area to a formal dining room and the four bedrooms. These sorts of floors really are something to be treasured and will become increasingly rare (and valued).

This is a great family home, with room to sprawl, but spaces to share.
