Baker family has one in the oven

THE imminent arrival of baby number four is the only reason this stunning home is on the market.

The owners bought the heritage-listed old stablehand’s cottage to turn it into their dream Freo home, but then mother nature intervened.

The three-bedroom dwelling looked a lot different back then and while many would have fled at the sight of decades of unsympathetic extensions, they rolled up their sleeves and set to.

Unsightly cladding and extensions were peeled back to the original limestone cottage, before starting afresh.

Intending to stay, the vendors poured their hearts and souls into the renovations/extension, including sourcing gorgeous stone from Bali for the floors. The same stone can be seen in the a bath deep enough to swim in.

The finished home, sitting on a pocket-sized 216sqm, won both a national heritage award and the WA AIA Architecture Award for 2013.

The old stablehand’s abode has been transformed into a cosy office/study, with its own entrance, while a fresh and exciting addition, clad in cedar, is found in the rear.

The result is a thoroughly modern, solar-passive home architecturally designed for today’s family (well, those with fewer than six people in them).

Downstairs you’ll find a spacious open-plan kitchen/living/dining area, with cedar bifold doors onto a delightful courtyard garden, with its cute, high-rise cubby and plunge pool.

The bold colours of a series of dazzling Moroccan lights add to the charm of the living area.

It’s not just the food that is mouthwatering in the kitchen, with black granite bench tops, including a breakfast bar, heaps of cupboard space and top-notch stainless steel appliances.

Head upstairs and you’ll find the bedrooms, one with a very cute cloud painted ceiling.

The main bedroom is a commodious space with an open-plan ensuite, while the other two are double, with built-in robes.

Central Fremantle is virtually on the doorstep, and there’s an assortment of cafes, shops and restaurants within walking distance—as are schools.
