Hitting the Hawaii notes

A MURDOCH-BASED women’s barbership quartet has placed 19th out of 52 in a worldwide convention, held in Hawaii.

To qualify for the Hawaii finals, Hi-Jinx had to outsing their Australian competition, and now hold the record for the highest Aussie placing in the Sweet Adelines competition.

Baritone Kirsten Richardson describes the trip as “fabulous” with “great fun singing, touring and travelling”.

The other members of the quartet are Lindsey Dyer (bass), Jo Oosterhoff (tenor) and Bec Mutton (lead).

The women rehearse once a week and are coached by two American vocal coaches once a month via Skype. They plan weekend retreats to practise.

Most got their start with A capella West, which runs workshops. Next year the quartet hopes to break into the world’s top 15, and believe first place is not beyond their reach. Next up is a regional competition in Sydney in May.
