Dining in Fremantle is a vibrant melting pot of cuisines, culture and history. There’s perhaps nowhere else in town that embodies this more than Maya Indian Restaurant. Over the past 20 years, Maya has grown to become one of Perth’s most iconic eateries.
“We came to Australia in 1986 with a handful of luggage and lots of food memories. In 1992 my family took over Maya which then was a small, run down Indian restaurant. We renovated on a shoestring budget, changed the menu and started serving the food we loved, with a smile,” said owner and chef Gurps Bagga.
Diners soon embraced Maya, won over by the sensational food and wonderfully warm hospitality of the Bagga family. Gurps explained that the success of Maya really took off in 1996, when Heidi – a young waitress suggested he enter the Gold Plate Awards. After some initial reluctance, Gurps agreed and Maya went on to win the Gold Plate for best Asian restaurant. “Without her encouragement, I would not have entered. The awards were on a Monday and the very next Tuesday evening, there was a queue of diners waiting at the door!”
Gurps is truly passionate about food. For food to taste this good, it takes time. “You cannot rush it – there are no short cuts. Our butter chicken, for example, takes two days to prepare.”

Whet your appetite with starters like tandoor-roasted chicken tikka, marinated in house-made yoghurt and fresh spices; lamb seekh with tomato, onion and coriander relish; fried fish with green mango; or street potato tikki. Can’t decide? For $14.50 per person you can order the tasting plate and try them all. Mains include slow cooked goat, spicy fish curry with local Cone Bay barramundi. Most dishes are gluten free, there’s good dairy free options and vegetarians are well catered for. All desserts are made in-house, so make sure you leave some room!
Over the years Maya has won several accolades along the way. But one thing has remained the same: “Our focus is to provide beautiful food, service with a smile and great value dining.”
During the month of February, diners can BYO wine any night of the week, so come down and celebrate! Bookings are welcome but not essential.
