From a very young age, Guido Micalizzi had a love for food. He was always in the kitchen, learning the art of Sicilian cooking from his dear mother. He loved the aromas and tastes, so much so that even then, Guido knew cooking would later become his profession. And like most things with Guido – once decided, there’s no turning back! Learning the traditional methods – the way to create a sauce, or the way to prepare and cook seafood was exciting and inspired in him a passion that continues to this day.
Guido had found the key ingredients to his future – food and family. He decided to combine his two loves and open a restaurant. Locals may recall the famous Primavera Ristorante on Marine Terrace, the family’s first venture, which became a much loved part of the Freo dining scene for many years.
Local foodies in the know are already onto East Fremantle’s hidden gem, Numero Uno – Guido’s latest enterprise. As you might expect from the Micalizzi clan, Numero Uno is a welcoming, family friendly restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and the service genuine. The decor is contemporary, with soft lighting and crisp linen tablecloths. There are many wonderful dishes to try, but the star of the show is seafood. Born and raised into a fishing family, not only does Guido know how to source the best produce – which is the key to any great dish, he also knows how best to prepare it to let the quality of the seafood shine.
Mouthwatering entree selections include Crochette di Granchio – crab and sweet potato cakes served with avocado salsa. Mains are just as tempting, with choices like Mezzelune all’aragosta – homemade agnolotti pasta filled with crayfish and ricotta in a tomato sauce, with a dash of cream & sambuca topped with prawns and Spaghetti Vongole – spaghetti tossed with pan-fried clams, garlic, chilli and parsley. There’s delicious options for meat lovers and vegetarians are not forgotten either, with several dishes to try.
As Guido says: “You’d be doing yourself a disservice to visit Numero Uno and skip past the seafood.”
